Carretera Austral, another dream comes true. In January 2020, we drove the entire Carretera Austral which winds for 1247 km from Puerto Montt to Villa O’Higgins, the only road that descends along the Chilean fjords. In reality, the journey was longer considering some detours which enriched the trip. Begun in 1976 at the behest of the military junta of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Ruta 7 in 1996 reached Puerto Yungay and was then extended to Villa O’Higgins in 2000. Initially, the road was all dirt, now there are several asphalted sections. It is not just the road. If you want to travel the whole of the Carretera Austral – and this was our firm intention – you have to plan for three ferries. The first two ferries are at the beginning of the route and the last one at the end in order to reach Villa O’Higgins. The magical Caleta Tortel has been accessible by road since 2003 and Puerto Raúl Marín Balmaceda only since 2009…
